Last night I managed to find a Greek Salad on the menu in a local
bar/diner, with live networked lottery games every four minutes on the big
screen – slips right there on the table with the condiments!.
The trip is adding to my knowledge of the American Civil War
– much of it gained from Gone With the Wind and North and South (probably not
the best education) - as we have now visited several sources of Civil War history.
Cuba has a series of town murals depicting specific incidents in Missouri and
Cuba itself.
Today the TV weather reported the temperatures were 10 – 20
above seasonal so it is very hot for the time of year.
Our stay today was in another period hotel – The Boots Court
Motel. I am sure Neill will have
mentioned that Clark Gable stayed in our room which was quite exciting. The
rooms were better equipped than the Wagon Wheel and had hanging space, period
radio playing 50s/60s music and convenient parking right outside.
The Carthage town square was lovely and apparently the
inspiration for the Back to the Future original square. The Sirloin Stockade a few blocks’ walk away (in
searing heat) paid dividends for me with a great selection of salads and
desserts.
Day Eight
I had asked if we could visit one of the Bonnie and Clyde
hideouts on the tour and that came up today.
You can still see the bullet hole in the wall where they had a shoot out
before escaping.
Sticking with the crime theme, we also visited the site of
the first bank robbed by Jesse James and the gang. The facade has changed a little over 150
years but inside the banking hall (now a cafe) much remains the same.
We also visited some old movie theatres and a drive-in which
have all survived since the 30s/40s and look really good today.
By the time we got to Tulsa the temperature had reached
three figures. The all time low for last
night in our area was 44 in 2011 and we had 74. We took a swim on arrival as it is too hot
to go out (102) just yet although we plan a walk before bedtime.
